Six Geese a-Laying

On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me
six geese a-laying…

The six geese a-laying are said to represent the six days of Creation.

“And God saw everything that he had made,
and indeed, it was very good.”

— Genesis 1:31

Creation unfolds not in chaos, but in rhythm. Day by day, space is made for life. Light, land, sea, creatures, and humanity are called into being—not rushed, not wasted.

To speak of creation today is to speak with grief as well as wonder. The news reminds us daily of ecosystems under strain, climates shifting, species disappearing. The goodness of creation feels fragile, even threatened.

Broken Theology refuses to spiritualise our way out of this reality. If creation is good, then its suffering matters. If the world is loved by God, then our care—or neglect—has consequence.

The image of geese laying eggs speaks of potential and responsibility. Creation is not finished; it is entrusted. New life requires patience, protection, and restraint.

We are not owners of the world, but participants within it.

Hope, here, is not passive. It looks like choosing care over convenience, reverence over extraction, attention over apathy. Small acts of faithfulness, repeated daily, still matter.

Creation continues.
So does our calling.

May you tend the earth
with wonder, grief, and patience—
life still being born.
