Innocence Lost (Coventry Carol)

Lully, lullah, thou little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.
Thou little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.

O sisters too, how may we do,
To bear this grief, this pain so true?
For the young lives lost in October’s wake,
At Hamas hands, our hearts do break.

In Gaza’s plight, with rage and pain,
The forces wage through night and day,
Innocence lost, at such great cost,
As young lives are blown away.

That woe is me, poor child, for thee
And ever mourn and may
For thy parting neither say nor sing,
“Bye bye, lully, lullay.”

7 of 25 Christmas carols with revised lyrics for Advent & Christmas Day reflections 2024, can be sung to the relevant tune.

Full disclosure, ChatGPT has been utilised in the developing of this revised version of the Coventry Carol which touches on current affairs with reference to Israel and Palestine, while incorporating biblical references by or about Jesus (Matthew 2:16-18). The hope is that, amidst the division and suffering, a message of peace, justice, hope and reconciliation remains.

  1. Why no reference to millions of Jews (innocent Jews who have nothing to do with Hamas atrocities in October 2023) but yet they have been threatened,  bullied, attacked and business places set on fire.I know because Palestine flags were illegally put on lampposts in areas of my city where there is a higher Jewish population.  Nothing was done.  No one was prosecuted.  But peace loving Jews have lived in fear.  They need our prayers. Why are so few speaking up to remind the world that the purpose of Hamas – stated in writing – is to wipe out Jews.I’m sorry but while I sympathize for those suffering in Gaza,  there are many more Jews around the world suffering due to Hamas.I’ll leave my email because I’m willing to listen to another point of viewandrew.l.willis@gmail.com Sent from my Galaxy

    • No reference because the focus of this reimaged carol focusses on the situation in Israel and Palestine, giving voice to the suffering in both places. As this is a series of reimagined carols during the season of Advent focusing on different current affairs perhaps one will focus on the issues you mention, just as there may be one about the rise in Islamaphobia. You’ll have to wait and see what is to come. Thanks for the feedback and taking the time to comment.
