On and On

I put out a post yesterday asking if anyone would like to share a little hope. I’ve had a few responses and I hope there will be more so that over the coming 40 days it won’t simply me my words but those of others sharing something about where they (you) find hope, and helping us all to lift our eyes above the dark clouds of despair.

I often find hope in a field each August, at a festival called Greenbelt. It was there I was introduced to the music of Beans on Toast. He’s a storyteller, a poet, who captures something about the big issues facing the world as well as the mundane and everyday. He shares about his drug use (I’m not interested and tend to skip songs about MDMA), his thoughts about religion (as a Pastor I can find those hard to hear, but they provide an insight to a different world view, plus I don’t always disagree with him). One song has been rolling around my brain when life is feeling somewhat hopeless and lifts me up is On and On, so I figure that’s a good place to begin.

Embracing the Journey

The lyrics of On and On reflect a profound understanding of life’s continuous journey. The song speaks to the idea that no matter what obstacles we face, life keeps moving forward. This notion is a powerful reminder that hope is not just about wishing for a better future, but also about finding strength and resilience in the present moment.

In the chorus, Beans on Toast sings:

Because life goes on
And on and on and on and on and on
Life goes on

These lines serve as a mantra, encouraging us to embrace the ongoing nature of life. They remind us that, despite the ups and downs, we have the capacity to keep going. Hope is found in the understanding that each day brings new opportunities for growth and healing.

Finding Beauty in Simplicity

Another theme that emerges from the song is the beauty of simplicity. Beans on Toast’s lyrics often celebrate the small, everyday moments that bring joy and meaning to our lives. In a world that can be overwhelming, it’s important to recognise and cherish these simple pleasures.

The song’s verses highlight ordinary experiences that are often taken for granted. Whether it’s watering tomatoes or changing a nappy, these moments are the building blocks of hope. They remind us that even in challenging times, there is beauty to be found in the mundane.

Hope in Connection

“On and On” also underscores the importance of human connection. The lyrics speak to the bonds we share with others and how these relationships can be a source of hope and support. In a society that often emphasises individuality, the song reminds us of the strength we derive from our connections with others.

Through the lens of Beans on Toast’s music, we see that hope is not a solitary pursuit. It is nurtured through our interactions with the people we care about and the communities we belong to. By supporting one another and finding solidarity in our shared experiences, we can cultivate a sense of hope that carries us through difficult times.

A Resonant Message

Ultimately, “On and On” by Beans on Toast offers a message of hope that is both simple and profound. It doesn’t shy away from the issues of raging battles, war, financial hardship or climate change but encourages us to keep moving forward, find joy in the little things, and lean on our connections with others. In doing so, we can navigate life’s challenges with a sense of optimism and resilience.

As the book of Hebrews reminds us, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). This verse gently echoes the sentiment of the song, reminding us that hope is rooted in faith and trust in the journey ahead.

As we listen to the song, let it be a reminder that hope is always within reach. It is found in the everyday moments, the relationships we cherish, and the understanding that, no matter what, life goes on.
