At the moment peace seems a word that is far away from a lot of people. Stressed, anxious, afraid, and tired are words that come up in a fairly regular basis if not in everyday in conversation. People don’t feel peace and calm because of an inner pain and struggle. Yet even in these times there are moments of peace.
I broke my arm 8 weeks ago and spent time feeling pain, unable to do basic everyday tasks, and concentration was difficult. Peace was not a word I felt. Instead, my world had been turned upside down. New rhythms and ways of doing things had to be found. My peace had disappeared. Praying was difficult, getting the space was hard. I could not concentrate due to the pain and tiredness I felt. Yet there were things that helped me to connect to moments of peace. Listening to relaxing music. A short walk with a friend in nature. And knowing that others were praying for me. Being uplifted in prayer is such a blessing and helped me feel peace.
It took several weeks before I felt at peace rather than tired and turbulent. What helped was finding more space to connect with God. To find a few words of scripture to hold onto. It was the words of the angel Luke 2:14 ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.’ Looking to God for His favour and peace. When peace came to me it was a gradual process. My peace was found with a warm feeling in my heart, and a calmness of mind. In this I found God and a ‘peace that transcends all understanding.’
